Dongduk Women's University is set to transition to coeducation starting in 2029 as a response to the nationwide trend of a declining school-age population. On December 3, President Kim Myung-ae announced the university's commitment to respect and accept the recommendation put forth by the Coeducation Public Deliberation Committee. This move is seen as an inevitable choice to secure the university's future competitiveness and ensure its sustainable development.
The university plans to implement the coeducation transition in 2029, the year current students graduate, to assure that students will complete their studies in the women's university environment they expected upon admission. Following this transition, only six four-year women's universities will remain in South Korea: Ewha, Sookmyung, Sungshin, Duksung, Seoul, and Gwangju Women’s University.
